Some people think that singing helps people to develop many skills and learning languages are not an exception, whereas others do not agree. They consider it as a useless skill.
In my opinion, singing can help to learn foreign languages. First of all, singing harmonizes a person. For example, it makes a person listen to the rhythm and lyrics of a song and then copy it. This is the same method “language learners” use when they learn languages as children. Secondly, before singing a song one should memorize it, which means he or she exercises their memorizing skill. Strong memory is an essential part of any learning, especially languages.
At the same timethere are people who believe that singing is useless for learning languages. They are sure that to be successful in learning languages one should just memorize the words and learn grammatical rules.
I do not agree with the opinion mentioned above. Memorizing the words and learning grammatical rules are important but at the same time word rhythms and memory that singing develops is even more important.
In conclusion, I would like to say there are opposing views on this issue. At first sight, singing might seem not really important for learning a foreign language but in actual fact, if one looks closer, it is even more important then just learning words and rules. Thus, I strongly believe singing can substantially help language learners.

Singing can help when learning a foreign language
It is a source of national embarrassment – despite hours of lessons and listening to foreign language tapes, most of us ___ (A). However, a new study suggests there may be hope for those who have difficulty with a foreign language – they should try singing it instead.
Research found that adults who sang words or short phrases from a foreign language while learning were twice as good at speaking it later. It is thought that by listening to words that are sung, and by singing them back, the technique takes advantage of the strong links between music and memory.
Although not clearly understood, music is known to help students ___ (B) recall.
Dr Overy said singing could lead to new approaches to learning a foreign language. She said: “Most people ___ (C) from songs they have heard and songs are sometimes used by language teachers with young children.”
Dr Overy and her colleagues used recordings of Hungarian words to teach 60 adults. They chose Hungarian as the participants ___ (D) anguage.
The participants either listened to words that were spoken and then had to repeat them back, much like a standard teach-yourself tape, or the words were said rhythmically or sung.

This week end, great music festivals take place in France. Do you know that, while singing along your favourite tunes, you could improve your abilities in a foreign Language? According to a recent study, it could even be a really efficient way to learn!
Maybe you’ve experienced this with commercials or with old nursery rhymes : words seem easier to remember with music. Language works the same way. That’s what a research team for Edimburg University tried to prove with a new experiment.
Researchers took 60 adults and randomly split them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listen-and-repeat” learning conditions for a Hungarian Language Lesson. Researchers had one group simply speak the words.
They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. Hungarian might look like a strange choice to you but researchers chose this language mostly for two reasons : just a few people speak it and it doesn’t share any common roots with Spanish , French, English or German. All three groups studied Hungarian for fifteen minutes.
Then each member had to pass five tests to determine what they remembered from the lesson. After these were over, the singers group took the first place, by far.
According to Dr Katie Overy, who supervised the experiment, this results show that human brain remembers information more easily with a catchy tune. And when it comes to languages, there are actually more songs that you cant count.
This experiment gave ideas to a teacher at Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. To help his students learn Chinese, Professor Hua Zhu Ying has started to use songs and music.
“For example, for little kids usually we will use English songs but we are teaching them the Chinese lyrics. So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music. They just need to translate into Chinese words” says Ying. She adds that not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.
“So, I think they are really having fun learning Chinese songs using English music. Sometimes, I think if I were taught English like that way maybe I would speak much better English than now.” At Speaking-Agency, we strongly believe in this new fun ways of learning language.
