A problem of modern societies is the declining level of health in the general population, with conflicting views on how to tackle this worrying trend. One possible solution is to provide more sports facilities to encourage a more active lifestyle.

Advocates of this believe that todays sedentary lifestyle (WOW! Это крутое словосочетание!) and stressful working conditions mean that physical activity is no longer part of either our work or our leisure time. If there were easy to-reach local sports centres, we would be more likely to make exercise a regular part of our lives, rather than just collapsing in front of a screen every evening. The variety of sports that could be offered would cater for all ages, levels of fitness and interests: those with painful memories of PE at school might be happier in the swimming pool than on the football pitch (А это супер слово означает футбольное поле).

However, there may be better ways of tackling this problem. Interest in sport is not universal, and additional facilities might simply attract the already fit, not those who most need them. Physical activity could be encouraged relatively cheaply, for example by installing exercise equipment in parks, as my local council has done. This has the added benefit that parents and children often use them together just for fun, which develops a positive attitude to exercise at an early age.

As well as physical activity, high tax penalties could be imposed on high-fat food products, tobacco and alcohol, as excessive consumption of any of these contributes to poor health. Even improving public transport would help: it takes longer to walk to the bus stop than to the car.

In my opinion, focusing on sports facilities is too narrow an approach and would not have the desired results. People should be encouraged not only to be more physically active but also to adopt a healthier lifestyle in general.

They may also gain a better understanding of other cultures.

There are, however, some disadvantages. Что такое эссе IELTS

Writing IELTS — один из самых тяжелых модулей международного экзамена IELTS. Он состоит из 2 частей: Academiс и General. В первой части надо описать таблицу или схему. Во второй — написать сочинение IELTS.

На написание эссе IELTS выделяется сорок минут. У этой работы есть свои функции:

• эссе показывает, насколько хорошо экзаменуемый владеет лексикой и грамматикой;
• эссе проверяет умение выражать и аргументировать собственное мнение на английском языке;
• такой вид работы дает понять, какие познания у экзаменуемого в разных сферах: политика, образование, здравоохранении и пр.

Типы эссе IELTS

Экзаменуемому могут предложить один из нескольких типов эссе. Эти эссе значительно отличаются друг от друга:

1. Opinion essay — это тип эссе, в котором автор выражает свое личное мнение. Экзаменуемый может полностью согласиться с предложенным высказыванием в теме, а может согласиться частично.
2. Discussion essay. В этом типе эссе можно не показывать свою точку зрения. Тут надо привести два противоположных мнения и рассказать, почему кто-то придерживается одной стороны, а кто-то другой.
3. Advantage and Disadvantage essay. В таком эссе автор приводит преимущества и недостатки определенного мнения, явления, события.
4. Problem and Solution Essay — тип эссе по английскому, в котором описывается определенная проблема и пути ее решения.
5. Mixed essay — это смешанное эссе. В таком типе работы экзаменуемый отвечает на два поставленных вопроса. Он должен дать на них ответы, обозначить свое мнение и привести веские аргументы.

Структура сочинения IELTS

Вне зависимости от типа эссе, у каждой работы будет своя общая структура. Структура эссе по английскому стандартная:

1. Вводная часть.
2. Основная часть.
3. Заключение.

Рассмотрим, как написать каждую часть на основе эссе на тему курения в общественных местах. Задание в экзамене выглядит так: Some businesses prohibit smoking in any of their offices, some government have banned smoking in all public places, Do you agree or disagree that this is the right course of action? Give reasons for your opinion.

Во введении надо кратко обозначить, о чем пойдет речь в работе. Тут можно пересказать своими словами задание работы. Личное мнение автора и его позицию тут не пишут. Вступление должно быть коротким и быть не больше 3-4 предложений:

It is no question that the smoking of tobacco is harmful for people’s health. The ban of smoking in public places, offices, and transport may affect the health situation in very positive way. Taking into consideration the reasons of the smoking ban opponents, I believe that that harmful habit should be obliterated from our life; therefore, I agree with the smoking ban. The reasons behind this approach are medical, social and economic.

Основная часть состоит из 2 параграфов. В первой части автор обозначает свою позицию, во второй — ее аргументирует. В эссе по английскому языку не стоит задача убедить проверяющего в своей правоте. Главное, чтобы автор показал, почему он придерживается такой позиции:

From the medical point of view, the tobacco smoking have a noticeable negative effect on the health of both smokers and non-smokers. In fact, everyone knows that the nicotine, as a component of tobacco, is a very strong poison, the drop of which is able to kill a horse. Hence, the tobacco smokers spoil their health deliberately trying to belittle the destructive effect of their habit. What is worse, the smog of cigarettes is much more dangerous for people that surround the smoker and become the passive smokers. The result of both active and passive smoking is the same: the danger of such an awful illness as a lung cancer.

From the social viewpoint, smoking people create the unpleasant atmosphere around them and limit rights of other people to breathe the clean air. Although the smoking ban opponents believe that their right to smoke should be respected, they completely overlook toe fact that they discriminate other people who also have some rights. As a result, smokers might provoke the conflicts trying to advocate their right to smoke in prejudice of rights of other people.

Типичные ошибки в эссе IELTS

Многие экзаменуемые допускают в эссе примерно одинаковые ошибки. Посмотрите самые распространенные ошибки, чтобы не допустить их в своей экзаменационной работе:

Growing populations can also lead to growing demand for goods, allowing economies to expand. The problem is, however, that countries that are in need of labour forces and increasing demand are already the more developed countries and they meet some of these needs by immigration and exporting goods.
In conclusion, it is my belief that while certain areas of the world are in need of larger work forces to develop their economies, the continuously increasing population could potentially lead to crisis within countries that already struggle to provide for their inhabitants.

Структура работы:

1. Вступление — 2-3 предложения

Вступление должно быть коротким, простым и содержать:

• предложение, которое называет тему
• предложение, которое дает ответ на вопрос или выражает общее впечатление

Вступление вашего эссе — это перефразированная тема задания. Далее вы должны дать обобщенный короткий ответ на вопрос из задания.

Рассмотрим варианты замены слов и выражений:

affected → have had an influence
the way people interact with each other → communication between people
development → effects

Основные правила написания вступления:

• всегда перефразировать задание
• ответить на вопрос задания, четко выразив свою позицию
• не пояснять свое мнение

2. Параграфы (2 или 3) — по 5-6 предложений каждый

В этой части работы кандидату необходимо выразить свою точку зрения, аргументированно ее доказать и привести примеры. Текст нужно разделить на параграфы по принципы 1 параграф — 1 мысль. Количество параграфов в работе будет зависеть от типа эссе IELTS, про которые мы поговорим позже.

Topic sentence (тематическое предложение) — это первое предложение вашего параграфа, которое в общем характеризует вашу мысль. После него следует переходить к деталям и доказательствам вашей точки зрения.

Структура параграфа:

Первое предложение — topic sentence. Оно обобщенное, не сообщает ничего конкретного и в то же время дает понять, о чем пойдет речь в параграфе. Автор выбрал три сферы для описания, это понятно по связующим словам — firstly, secondly, finally. Он не только аргументированно доказывает свою точку зрения, но и приводит реальные примеры из жизни — for example.

Во втором параграфе автор разбирает позитивное и негативное влияние технологий при помощи вводных конструкций on the one hand и on the other hand. Положительное влияние он описывает при помощи контрастного сравнения прошлого и настоящего, что подкрепляется словом nowadays. Отрицательное же влияние раскрывается при помощи примера.

3. Вывод — 2-3 предложения

Главное правило написания вывода в работе — не вводить новую информацию. Вам нужно либо перефразировать уже сказанное во вступлении, либо подытожить информацию в параграфах.

Вывод кандидат начинает с вводной конструкции in conclusion и говорит в общем о последствиях воздействия технологий.

Типы эссе IELTS

Структура эссе IELTS не меняется, каким бы ни был вопрос. Но от типа эссе IELTS зависит, как вы построите свое вступление и как разделите информацию на параграфы.

Opinion essay

Opinion essay подразумевает выражение своей точки зрения. Вы можете полностью согласиться с неким утверждением, частично либо выразить полное несогласие.

Способ 1. Кандидат полностью согласен или полностью не согласен

В этом случае каждому аргументу в поддержку вашей точки зрения необходимо посвятить по параграфу. В таком типе эссе свое мнение вы указываете во вступлении и выводе.

Структура opinion essay 1:

Способ 2. Кандидат частично согласен или частично не согласен

Выбирая сбалансированный подход, вы должны не только описать проблему с двух сторон (один параграф — пункты за, а второй — пункты против), но и указать, какая позиция вам ближе. При этом желательно начать с идеи, которая вам менее близка, а второй параграф посвятить той, которой вы придерживаетесь. Свою позицию вы должны указать в трех местах: во вступлении, в выводе и в topic sentence второго параграфа.

Структура opinion essay 2:

Во вступлении автор выражает свое мнение, начиная со слов in my opinion. В первом параграфе он указывает менее близкую для него позицию, а во втором — ту, к которой склоняется больше. При этом он приводит последовательные и убедительные аргументы в поддержку своего мнения при помощи вводных конструкций on the one hand, on the other hand. В выводе автор использует вводный оборот in conclusion и обобщает свое мнение с помощью фразы I am still convinced that.

Discussion essay

В этом типе эссе IELTS вам дается тема, к которой нужно привести аргументы за и против. Собственное мнение нужно указывать, только если об этом сказано в задании. Если оно требуется, то структура работы будет совпадать со сбалансированным подходом (способ 2) opinion essay.

Структура discussion essay:

Автор выражает свое мнение при помощи фраз from my perspective, it is true that; in conclusion, although … I think. Аргументы за и против он вводит фразами on the one hand, the reasons why people enjoy; on the other hand, I believe.

Основная разница между opinion essay и discussion essay: в первом случае вы описываете свою точку зрения, а во втором — соглашаетесь или опровергаете чужую. Если в opinion essay вы можете привести примеры из вашей жизни, то в discussion essay вы аргументированно объясняете, почему одни люди придерживаются одних взглядов, а другие — противоположных.

Advantage and disadvantage essay

По своей сути advantage and disadvantage essay — то же самое, что discussion essay, только вам нужно описать плюсы и минусы идеи или какого-то явления. В одном параграфе вы указываете плюсы, а в другом — минусы, порядок не имеет значения.

Структура advantage and disadvantage essay:

Слова benefits, advantageous и to benefit указывают на преимущества годового перерыва в обучении, в то время как drawbacks, an opposite angle, to lose и to demotivate — на недостатки этого явления. В конце автор делает вывод при помощи словосочетания despite some benefits.

В этом типе эссе вам нужно указать причины и последствия определенной проблемы, а иногда предложить и пути ее решения.

Структура:

Перечисляя причины, автор использует следующие выражения: main reasons, the causes of this phenomenon are varied, the origins of the problem mainly come from. Для перечисления последствий он применяет выражения a good or bad effect, to have an influence, severe influences, is adversely affecting и the effects can be seen as negative.

Чтобы вы могли написать эссе на любую тему, расширяйте свой кругозор: читайте тематические статьи, смотрите видеоролики и т. д. Вы должны уметь привести весомые аргументы по любому вопросу. Приведем примеры аргументов за и против на тему «Тестирование медицинских препаратов на животных».

Аргументы за тесты над животными:

• животных используют в важных научных исследованиях;
• необходимо проводить медицинские тесты новых лекарств;
• тесты на животных помогают увеличить знания в области медицины и науки, достигнуть прорывов в медицине;
• за многими значимыми медицинскими открытиями стоят эксперименты над животными;
• некоторые медицинские и научные эксперименты нельзя провести на людях.

Аргументы против тестирования на животных:

• плюсы исследований на животных не оправдывают причиненные им страдания;
• есть альтернативные способы исследований;
• в большинстве случаев можно использовать машинное моделирование;
• следует уважать жизни животных;
• у людей нет морального права проводить эксперименты над животными.

Советы по подготовке к IELTS essay

Советы для самостоятельной подготовки к написанию эссе IELTS:

1. Читайте и анализируйте примеры выполненных работ. Выписывайте устойчивые выражения, полезную лексику по конкретным темам (экология, образование, медицина) и соединительные элементы.
2. Научитесь писать эссе по отдельным структурным элементам. Посвятите один день вступлениям к разным типам эссе, другой — параграфам, третий — выводам. Далее практикуйтесь в написании работы целиком.
3. Планируйте свое время, засекайте 40 минут на написание одного эссе.
4. Регулярно перечитывайте написанное и исправляйте себя.
5. Пишите от руки — это позволит вам понять, с какой скоростью вы пишете и как на бумаге выглядит нужное количество слов.

2. Рационально распоряжайтесь своим временем: потратьте 5 минут на планирование эссе, 5 минут — на вступление, 20 минут — на основную часть, 5 — на вывод и 5 минут — на вычитку написанного.
3. Перед написанием эссе IELTS продумайте основные идеи, которые вы бы включили в свою работу, сгруппируйте их. Убедитесь, что к каждой идее у вас есть аргумент или пример.
4. Следите за лексикой и грамматикой — используйте формальные или нейтральные выражения и конструкции, не употребляйте сокращения, сленг, разговорные слова, неформальные аббревиатуры, просторечия.
5. В вашей работе должна прослеживаться четкая и понятная логическая связь. Для этого используйте слова-связки, однако не злоупотребляйте ими — за это могут снизить баллы. Выбирайте простые связующие элементы: firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally, on the one/other hand, in conclusion, to begin, and, because, but.
6. Не бойтесь зачеркивать или вставлять слова при перечитывании работы. Вам не снизят за это баллы, если ваш почерк понятен и аккуратен.

Считается, и не зря, что написать хорошее эссе для успешного прохождения экзамена по английскому языку довольно трудно. Поскольку важно не только писать без очепяток, с правильной пунктуацией,
которая в английском языке весьма условная, хотя я, помнится, насчитал аж 17 её
правил и описал в блоге, но эссе должно быть чётко структурировано, а самое главное — не выезжать за рамки заданного количества слов. Поэтому я занялся тем, что стал собирать самые толковые
из образцов сочинений тех, кто успешно прошёл такой экзамен как IELTS. Если вы готовитесь к нему (или к ЕГЭ, поскольку суть одна и та же), обязательно почитайте, а некоторые постарайтесь даже
выучить наизусть, чтобы у вас в голове была точная картина структуры, которую при желании вы могли бы заполнить более подходящими для конкретной темы словами.

Поэтому не обращайте внимание на «игру» шрифтов в некоторых местах и на сбои в форматировании — не это главное.

Также имейте в виду, что количество тем здесь будет постоянно увеличиваться, а общий набор образов сочинений по IELTS я планирую довести до 150+.
